This course was a one-on-one tutorial that I took at Regents Park College in Oxford, England. I began the tutorial with the question: How did Jane Austen become a constructed character after her death? Each work of the course I researched and wrote an essay on a different era of Austen's reception after her death. Over the course of eight weeks I explored: early views of Austen in the Romantic era, the impact of Austen-Leigh's memoir, the phenomenon of the Janeites, the rise of academic Austen studies, Austen and the 'Great Tradition,' Austen on Film and Television, Austen through the Feminist lens, and Austen and fantasy.
Course Texts: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion.
